Who We Are

Mountaineers For Mutts (M4M) is a non-profit organization that focuses on animals in need. We believe that our society must become intolerant of the mass killings of our best friends and canine/feline family members. We are dedicated to the improvement of the health and well-being of companion animals. M4M rescues primarily within the North-Central WVa/Monongalia County area. We help cats, kittens, dogs and puppies as well as other pets as much as we can – so just ask us!. We are a foster-based pet rescue, meaning we do not have a physical shelter so we rely on volunteer foster homes to help us save pets.

M4M works closely with the Monongalia County Canine Adoption Center to rescue and promote the animals available for adoption at the shelter. We also foster injured or special needs pets from local veterinarians. We ensure every M4M pet is appropriately vetted to include: spay/neuter, vaccinations, FeLV/FIV tests for cats, 4DX test for dogs, parasite preventive and other health issues addressed as needed.

We do not accept surrendered animals from the general public but we will help you with rehoming your pet as much as we can. This process entails us meeting your pet to develop a bio profile on the pet including photos, video of a temperament test and information such as the pet’s age, weight, breed, sex, and behavior patterns. All this information is helpful for us to find the pet a forever home. All owner relinquished pets must submit/sign this form in order for M4M to rehome/rescue their pets.

We also have a Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) feral cat program for Monongalia and surrounding counties wherein we seek to halt the feral cat population growth. We need the public’s support to alert us to colonies in need as well as, humane trap setting & monitoring, ferrying to/from vet appointments, monitoring the colonies, etc. Ask us about how you can get involved in this program!!

We receive donations of pet food and supplies from time to time that once our fosters are supplied, we distribute this food to local food pantries for their clients. We also visit local schools and speak on humane treatment of our companion animals, the responsibilities of the pet ownership, and other humane awareness issues.

M4M always needs volunteers to help us in almost every area of humane activities including fostering animals for as little as a couple of days up to two weeks, transporting pets locally and longer distances, TNR volunteering in your own neighborhood, and fundraisers. For fosters, we provide food, crates, collars, leashes, ID tags, behavioral guidance and all veterinary care for the pet. You provide a loving and secure home for a short time. If you are interested in volunteering in whatever capacity you can, contact us at Mountaineers for Mutts. If you are interested in donating towards our rescue efforts click here.
